Your worth rides on your performance
If you do well in school, sports, or work, you feel like somebody. If you don't or something goes wrong and you can't perform you feel unfulfilled and empty. You realize depression is a real thing. Your identity is tied to the next result.

Titles and accolades become the point
You start to believe that what you accomplish, the career accolades, the awards, anything with a title attached is what makes you special. So you keep reaching for the next one.

It's never enough
Every time you get the thing or get the attention, you need more. The high never lasts. You're never satisfied. There's always a next one then a next one then a next one.
